In November of 2023, my life took a rather unexpected turn. I found myself struggling with a very difficult decision as a paraprofessional in a local public school. The district I worked for was voting on a policy that went against every belief and moral I stood for. In the end, I chose my own convictions and resigned from my position immediately after the policy was passed; sending my resignation letter to the school board and Superintendent. The challenge of leaving a job I loved and a community that felt like a second home, broke a little piece of me. I was unwilling to stop teaching and found work at a Catholic School. I felt so many things were unresolved with my previous employer and the policy’s purpose, yet, thought it best to leave quietly. So, I did, until Allen Sarvinas found my letter of resignation.

A couple weeks after my resignation, I learned, through new coworkers, that Parent’s Rights in Education had discovered my resignation letter along with a couple news outlets who had posted it to their social media platforms. Initially, I was taken aback that people other than the intended audience had access to my letter. So, to gain a bit of control for myself, I reached out to Mr. Sarvinas to discuss his position and organization, Parent’s Rights in Education. What I believed would be a quick correspondence to clarify a few nagging questions, turned into a two year collaboration and friendship that continues today.

Allen helped me navigate a confusing realm of school board jargon, district rules, and local, state and federal laws. He convinced me many people shared my position, and that I could garner support to possible effect change in the policy. So, my very first petition was born. Allen’s expertise in local politics and beyond, was instrumental in getting this petition off the ground. He facilitated a seamless petition campaign for a novice like me. Thankfully, due to his inept abilities, this grassroots petition attempt gathered more than 350 signatures. During the collection of signatures, one thing became abundantly clear. Many individuals knew nothing about this particular policy, directly indicating the lack of school board transparency. The petition effort delivered awareness to the community that quickly spread.

Allen’s tenacity did not stop at the petition. He convinced me to join Parent’s Rights in Education to spread my message to other Maine communities. He respected my decision to not pursue any legal actions with my former district but was adamant that my story was important and could help other parents and teachers navigate what was becoming a tumultuous sea of deceit and indoctrination. Thanks to Allen’s drive, support and unfailing belief in my ability, I have been able to step out of my comfort zone and tell my story to crowds of people. Sharing my message to parents and educators is something that Allen knew would drive people to take action. His vision for growth always involves people sharing and networking. Allen knows we are only as strong as the people we surround ourselves with. He knows that a grassroots organization can move mountains if the people behind it believe in their mission and themselves.
